Before you get caught up in the excitement of a sparkling new home think about a few things:
- Understand your commute. Often time’s new developments are far from the city center. Make sure the drive will not impact your quality of life.
- Making it your own. While new is lovely it is also not without drawbacks. Your landscaping will not be established and likely you will want to add to the minimal landscaping provided by the builder. You may also find yourself spending money on customizing closets, garage storage and a multitude of other “little things” that already come with a house that has been lived in.
- Is the neighborhood right for you? Often time developments, unless custom, contain homes that are very similar to one another. Will the cookie-cutter nature of the subdivision drive you crazy?
- Understand the long term development plans. Builders typically space out homes that are being built. What appears to be generous spacing between houses may later turn into tight spacing. Know the wideth of the lots and the intended density of the development before you buy.
